Ending OctoberWest with a Bang

Fireworks over the Fields

By Jaylin Johnson, Correspondent

The week of OctoberWest has passed for our campus, but this year’s event truly went out with a bang. The main event of OctoberWest, the Friday Fair, took place on Friday, Oct. 1st. As the fair ended around 8:00 p.m., all the bounce houses were deflated, and all the other events were cleaned up. Music played from speakers set up around the field, many of the students formed a kick line to one of the songs and danced around groups of students spread out on the lawn on their picnic blankets, ready for the fireworks.

The fireworks were delayed due to a miscommunication with parking, so at 8:15 p.m., the school set up bonfires for students to keep warm and roast smores as the sun set and the air cooled. The lights on the field were turned off, with many students crowded around the bonfires roasting marshmallows and keeping the cold away. Students gathered around the fires until around 8:30 p.m., when the sky above the field lit up. Fireworks filled the pitch-black night sky as students settled on the grass to enjoy the show.

The fireworks were very spectacular and went beyond what most students had been anticipating, with Lillian Sudkamp saying, “The fireworks are way more impressive than I expected and went on for such a long time.” The fireworks went on until 9:00 p.m., when most attending students packed up and headed home for the night. With that, OctoberWest came to an end, and October had officially begun, leaving students to look forward to next year’s OctoberWest.

The fireworks and smores were the perfect way to end OctoberWest and entertain the student body on a cold Friday night. Mackenzie Shughart said, “I wish the campus did more things like this. Tonight was a lot of fun! I can’t wait for next year’s show,” and she is not alone in feeling that way. Quite a few students are looking forward to next year’s OctoberWest and any other school events this year. Dulce Marquez confirms this sentiment by saying, “The vibe is amazing, and the fireworks were beautiful. Definitely one of the best fireworks shows I’ve seen and a great way to take a break from school to have fun.” So, for any students who wanted to be at this event but couldn’t, keep an eye out for other events around campus.
