TV Show Review – “Charmed”

4/5 Stars

When I was younger, I saw my parents watching a show called “Charmed.” At the time, I thought it looked scary. Last summer, I was flipping through the channels looking for something to watch, and that same show popped up on the guide. I was curious what the show was really about, so I decided to give it a try.

“Charmed” is a show about sisters – Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and Paige Halliwell – who live in their family mansion in San Francisco. In the first part, they discover a book of magic called The Book of Shadows, which is written by their grandmother and ancestors. The book introduced them to magic and to their destiny to be the Charmed Ones, powerful witches destined to protect the world from evil. At the beginning, they didn’t know how to use spells or magic. As the series progresses, they learn how to use the magic to help others and find out that they cannot use it to benefit themselves. Each of them is gifted with special powers, and they can also combine their powers to fight larger evils.

Prue is the oldest sister. She works as an appraiser for historical objects being put up for auction. She had to help her grandmother, Penny, take care of her younger sisters because their mother died, and dad wasn’t around. She has the power to move objects with her mind.

Piper is the second oldest. Her dream is to open her own restaurant because she likes to cook. She can freeze time. Phoebe, the third sister, goes back to school to get her degree. She later becomes a newspaper columnist. She gets premonitions in which she can see the near future. Paige, the youngest Halliwell sister, is a social worker. She likes to help people. She can move herself through space, called orbing, as well as move objects and heal people.

The first season of Charmed aired in the Fall of 1998. The TV show was very popular and ran for eight seasons, totaling 178 episodes. Till this day, there are many reruns on different TV channels like TNT and CW, and online platforms like Amazon Prime, Vudu, and Google Play. There has been a reboot whose first season aired in 2018 and is prepping for season three in 2021. It is not as popular as the original show, and fans of the old Charmed show are upset that there is actually a reboot at all; they believe that there will never be anything as good as the original Charmed.

I enjoyed watching the show during my summer, even though there are some aspects of a few characters and later developments that I was not a huge fan of. (I cannot fully describe them here because it would spoil your experience in case you do decide to watch this show.) That is why I would give this show only 4/5 stars. I did like the whole idea that was presented though. The mix of suspense, drama, and a pinch of comedy is masterful. I love the special effects used to bring the magic to life. The costumes for the magic creatures are very creative and help the audience to immerse themselves within the world of witchcraft. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone who likes magic.
