RA Spotlight: Kate Zimmerman

Kate Zimmerman has been a Resident Assistant (RA) since the Fall of 2018. Zimmerman used to be an RA in Mingus Hall 5 on floor one but is currently in the Village Hall 10 overseeing 64 students. Kate is majoring in Aerospace Engineering – Aero Track and enjoys streaming Twitch and hiking around Willow Lake and the Dells.

Q: What do you think of the most out of date housing complex besides Thumb Butte?

A: The Mingus complexes have been on campus the longest. They have cast iron piping, no elevators, and are showing their age but honestly, I love the layout of the buildings and I enjoyed my time living there.

Q: What do you like the most and the least about your position?

A:  I love getting to know more people on campus through my residents. I’ve befriended people I never would have had the chance to meet if I didn’t take the position of an RA.

The part I like the least about my position would have to be the extensive training we do before each semester starts, which requires we arrive days early.

Q: Why did you decide to be RA?

A:  I decided to become an RA because my RA lived in my suite freshman year. I was able to meet other RAs who I enjoyed spending time with and got to see the great aspects of the job. Plus, I liked meeting new people and helping them out.

Q: Being an RA requires lots of energy, do you think you’ve changed since taking the role? How so?

A:  Since taking the job, I’ve become better at time management, prioritizing work in a way so I can still do the things I love. I’ve also become more laid back since taking the role, in the sense that sometimes stuff hits the fan and you roll with the punches. The job of an RA is very unpredictable and sometimes chaotic.
