The season 17 premiere episode titled “Out of Darkness” aired on CBS on Sept. 24, 2019. NCIS follows a team of detectives who investigate criminal cases involving Naval and Marine personnel. The team is commanded by Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a former Marine sniper. He supervises a team of three agents: Timothy McGee, a computer/cybersecurity specialist, Eleanor Bishop, a former NSA analyst, and Nicholas Torres, a former undercover agent. They are assisted by medical examiners Ducky Mallard and Jimmy Palmer, forensic scientist Kassie Hines, and psychologist Jacqueline Sloane.
In the season 16 finale, viewers received a surprise with the return of Ziva David. Ziva David (pronounced dah-veed), played by Cote de Pablo, left NCIS in 2013, at the beginning of season 11. David had a huge influence on the show because of her chemistry with Special Agent Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly. Weatherly left the show at the end of season 13 in 2016. During his departure episode, it was revealed that Ziva was killed in a house fire, although her body was never found, and she had a child that he fathered. DiNozzo left NCIS to care for their child.
We found out at the end of season 16 that Ziva is not dead. She appears at Gibb’s house to warn him that his life is in danger. The plot continues to the beginning of season 17 Ziva reveals that she had been hiding from a woman named Sahar, who is trying to kill her. She is targeting the people close to her, starting with Gibbs. Throughout the rest of the episode, we see the rest of the team investigatin, trying to locate Gibbs and Ziva and gather intel on Sahar’s location. Along with the continuation of the storyline from season 16, we see the return of Ziva and Gibb’s father-daughter relationship. In an effort to protect Gibbs, Ziva insists that he go to a safe house while she fights Sahar alone. But after all the years apart, Gibb’s is still loyal to Ziva and refuses to leave. In the end, they do locate and arrest Sahar, but Ziva is determined to kill her. The episode ends on another cliffhanger with Ziva pointing a gun at Sahar and Gibb’s in the middle.
The episode was filled with excitement, action, and lots of unanswered questions that persuade the viewers to watch next week’s episode. I would recommend long-time NCIS fans to tune in, but newer viewers might not understand some of the references made about the series’ past. What makes NCIS different than other crime dramas is the development and interaction of the characters. There is humor mixed with action and storylines that keep viewers on their feet which makes this TV series worthwhile. Tune into next week’s episode to see what happens next!
